Giovanni “Van” Gondola (1929-2022)

Giovanni “Van” Gondola passed away at the age of 93 years old. He was comforted by his two sons, Preston and Buck. He was born on March 30, 1929 in Cinniapolis, the son of Anthony Sr. and Jane Gondola. He married Katherine “Kitty” Howard on the 11th of November in 1950, in St. Boris Cathedral, the parish his family and community helped fund and construct. Van lived his entire life in Cinniapolis, graduating from St. Boris Elementary, Cinni Prep, and receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Cinniapolis State. Van was a lifelong public servant. He was most notably the longest serving Mayor of Cinniapolis. He was first elected in 1952 and held the office until he stepped down in 2016. He enjoyed watching local high school and college athletics, and he was known to place a bet or two at the Cinniapolis track. His favorite meal was spaghetti and meatballs. He always cherished time with his family, especially their annual early August vacations. Van is survived by his eldest son, Preston (Sindy) Gondola; youngest son Buck (Jade) Gondola; grandsons Jack, William, and Kenneth; granddaughters Mickie and Roxie; and his sister Vanessa. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Anthony Jr., Marie and Greta. Memorial Services will be held at Huron Funeral Home. Burial will be at St. Boris Cemetery.
