Cinniapolis City Council voted unanimously to hold the Mayoral special election on February 28th. The election date has been moved up from November 5th, 2024 due to increased public and private pressure towards the current administration. City Council sources confirmed there will be no Mayoral election in November 2024, however, City Council elections will still be on the ballot at that time. Nonetheless, Cinniapolis enters uncharted territory with a hasty election on the horizon.
There has been fervent speculation surrounding potential candidates in recent weeks. With yesterday’s filing deadline passed, Cinnipolitans now know who their choices will be for this upcoming election. Mayor Gondola made his intention to run clear after the City Council voted in favor of this special February election. Here is the full list of candidates who have decided to run for Mayor of Cinniapolis:
Preston Gondola
Current Mayor running for a third term. Mr. Gondola served as a City Councilman for 27 years before he was appointed Mayor by his father in 2015. He won re-election in 2016. But after a shaky first full term as Mayor, he narrowly won re-election in 2020. Now, he’ll have to win one more when it seems like the odds are stacked against him. Public approval ratings of his administration are at an all-time low, plus he disappeared from the public eye for nearly 2 months this past Fall drawing intense public scrutiny. But, Cinniapolitans know they can never count out a Gondola.
Arnold “Arn” Murphy
Mr. Murphy is a first time candidate and the brother of Chess Murphy. He managed his brother’s losing campaign in 2016 so he is no stranger to politics. Mr. Murphy is the CEO of Murphy Waste Management. The Murphys and Gondolas have a decorated history of public spats and are consistently at odds on what’s best for Cinniapolitans.
Oliver Roseman
Mr. Roseman, founder the Beaned Café, is another first time candidate. His successful business endeavors led him to believe he can apply that same creativity and compromise to governing. Mr. Roseman is very popular with Cinniapolitan sports fans, thanks to his team-focused, sacrificial approach to his baseball career.
Waldo Penney
This should be no surprise. Mr. Penney is the owner of Penney’s Fish Market. For the past several years, he has been a vocal critic of Mayor Gondola. He is a frequent guest on 510 AM radio opining on Cinniapolis politics and has developed a passionate following over the years. He headlined the Freedom Forever Rally, what most agree was a catalyst for this special election.
Justine Wellington
Ms. Wellington is the current City Manager. Many were flummoxed when she cast the tie-breaking vote to hold this special election but it may be a bit clearer now with her declared candidacy. Ms. Wellington is often criticized as an outsider because she is not a lifelong Cinniapolitan. She has had several of her policies pooh-poohed because they are “too extreme”, according to fellow council members and the Mayor himself.
